SUMMARY:John Rigby-Jones on Ground Stiffness Surveys
DESCRIPTION:The Keighley Association of Engineers is pleased to announce its June event in the 2016 syllabus\, an illustrated talk by John Rigby-Jones – BEng(Hons) MSc EurIng CEng MICE – on Ground Stiffness Surveys.\n\nAccurate and reliable knowledge of ground stiffness is key to the economical design of foundations to civil engineering structures. Ground stiffness has traditionally been measured either by crude field testing combined with questionable empirical relationships; laboratory testing of typically unrepresentative soil samples; or for the largest projects using expensive full scale load tests or complex and time consuming\ninsitu measurement techniques.\n\nViwe the flyer on the talk by John Rigby-Jones on Ground Stiffness Surveys

SUMMARY:Visit to Bradford University
DESCRIPTION:The Keighley Association of Engineers is pleased to announce its October 2015 event\, a visit to The Centre for Polymer Micro and Nano Technology located at Bradford University. \nThe Centre for Polymer Micro and Nano Technology\nRecent advances in micro and nano-technology are realising devices with a huge range of applications in the telecommunications\, medical\, and automotive sectors. This demand has led to the emergence of micro injection moulding (micro moulding) as an optimum technique for micro-component manufacture that offers all the benefits of conventional injection moulding such as high production capacity at low marginal cost. \nThe Research and Knowledge Transfer (RKT) Centre for Polymer Micro and Nano Technology (Polymer MNT) is a new facility within the world-class IRC Polymer Engineering laboratories at the University of Bradford. Polymer MNT allows access to equipment and expertise required for companies of all sizes to develop a successful micro moulding or nano-scale surface feature moulding process. \nFlyer: A visit to the Centre for Polymer Micro and Nano Technology at Bradford University

SUMMARY:Barrie Yates - Joseph Bazalgette and the Great Stink
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Barries Yates on Joseph Bazalgette and the Great Stink. \nBarry writes:\nIn London in the 1850’s it became impossible for Parliament to work due to the smell from the open sewer that the Thames had become\,  known as the ‘Great Stink’. Action was taken that London still benefits from today. Bazalgette not only installed many miles of new sewerage pipes and infrastructure\, he redesigned much of London\, and thousands of deaths due to Cholera were saved as well. Oh\, and did I mention that in between he sired eleven children? \nView the flyer for this talk by Barrie Yates

SUMMARY:Visit to NSF Ltd
DESCRIPTION:The Keighley Association of Engineers is pleased to announce its early January 2016 event\, a visit to NSF Controls Ltd\, Keighley (please note this is an afternoon weekday visit). \nOperating from the same West Yorkshire site since 1948\, the company’s expertise is wide reaching establishing NSF as a knowledgeable provider of customised and creative electro-mechanical actuation products. \nOriginally known for manufacture of rotary wafer switches\, NSF Controls’ reputation for reliability and superior quality has made it the world-class manufacturer it is today. \nA Brief History of NSF Controls\nThe origins of NSF go back to 1931 when a German manufacturing company\, Nuernberg Schwachstrom Fabriken\, set up British NSF Ltd as an import house. It was 1932 before British manufacture commenced making small components essential to aircraft production in the south of England. \nOutbreak of war saw NSF placed under the government’s Custodian of Enemy Property\, and a target for German air attack. It was in such a raid that around 30 employees were killed and several wounded. The  Ministry of Aircraft Production redistributed factories to include Northern England and the first Keighley premises in Dalton Lane were born. \nIn peacetime\, the Company moved to their current premises at Ingrow Bridge and production mainly of resistors\, condensers and carbon potentiometers with some switch products started. British NSF joined the Rothermal Corporation\, later to be known as the Motor and Electronics Corporation. \nIn 1950 manufacture of the Ledex Rotary Solenoid started under licence from Ledex Incorporated\, and in 1951 the name was changed to NSF Ltd\, with rotary wafer switch production starting soon after. Over the years\, manufacturing continued and diversified\, with NSF playing a key role in the then Simms Motor and Electronics Corporation. This was eventually to be acquired by the Lucas Group in 1968\, however\, it was not until 1980 that reorganisation within Lucas took NSF into the Lucas Industrial Systems group of companies and the Lucas identity was adopted. \nFollowing a merger with the Varity Corporation in 1996\, Lucas consolidated its core automotive businesses and several companies within the new group were considered surplus to requirement including the Keighley site. \nRecognising the remaining business as a viable operation with unfulfilled potential\, managers led a successful purchase resulting in the rebirth of NSF Controls Ltd on July 4th 1997. Previously held global manufacturing and distribution relationships were re-established and NSF Controls Ltd has seen year on year growth ever since. \nExpect a highly interesting and informative visit to this specialist and long standing Keighley based manufacturing company. \nNote: \n\nIt is recommended to wear appropriate attire complete with safety shoes and glasses during this visit\, visitors are kindly requested to bring their own PPE equipment if available.\n\nFlyer: A visit to NSF Controls Ltd
